National treasure Sir Anthony Hopkins has won a top award at the glittering Golden Globes ceremony.

One of the UK's most successful exports, Sir Anthony, was awarded the Cecil B DeMille award for lifetime achievement.

He was handed his gong by expectant mother Gwyneth Paltrow, who said the actor had a career "most of us can only dream of."

The 67-year-old has previously won an Oscar for his chilling role as Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs and has been nominated for six Golden Globes since 1978.

Sir Anthony was thrilled to receive the award:

"I've been around a long time and I never expected this. This industry has been really good to me."

Meanwhile it was gay cowboy flick Brokeback Mountain that galloped off with the top gongs at the Globes.

The cowboy movie pulled in four prizes including Best Drama and Best Director for Ang Lee.

Brits Kenneth Branagh and Bill Nighly were beaten by Jonathan Rhys Meyers for the best actor in a mini series or film made for TV award.

Fellow Irishman Pierce Brosnan failed to get his hands on a best actor award, which was stolen by Joaquin Phoenix for his portrayal of Johnny Cash in biopic Walk The Line.

Hollywood hunk George Clooney picked up a Golden Globe for his role in Syriana, leaving Mrs Henderson Presents actor Bob Hoskins walking away empty handed.

Meanwhile, everyone's favourite housewives were left still feeling desperate for an award, Eva Longoria, Teri Hatcher, Marcia Cross and Felicity Huffman all lost out on best TV actress by Mary-Louise Parker in Weeds.
